Grower: winter rainfall region, part of the fynbos ecoregion of the Western Cape in South Africa. Needs, rocky sandstone, Meditteranean climate, frost tender

Light: full sun, can tolerate medium sun

Water: originates from winter rainfall regions, so if grown out of the habitat, simulate winter rainfall when dry. Do not overwater the Aloe, summertime, water once per wk in order to store moisture for growth in winter

Soil type: well-draining succulent growing medium, no need for fertilizer, in its habitat the soil is poor, so rather simulate the plant’s original habitat

 

ORIGIN / HISTORY

  • The location for Kumara plicatillis is found between Franschhoek and Elandskloof, Western Cape, South Africa
  • Grows 10 – 20cm per year, so it will be classed under slow growing
  • Genus Kumara was described by German botanist Friedrich Kasimir Medikus, in 1786
  • Previously known as Aloe plicatilis
  • There are only two species in the genus, the other being Kumara haemanthifolia, which occurs on the high mountain peaks in the Hottentots Holland Mountains to Cold Bokkeveld Mountains
