Gasteria is in the Alooideae genus, predominantly confined to Africa, Madagascar and adjacent regions, but the main centres of species diversity are in Southern Africa. Gasteria is a well-defined, natural and monophyletic (can be separated from the root with a single cut, whereas a non-monophyletic group needs two or more cuts) group.
