Cacti

Cacti are all members of a single family (the Cactaceae), and most have succulent stems used for storing water.  Nearly all cacti have spines, which are modified leaves.  Spines provide a defence against predators. The main function is to condense moisture for it to drip onto the ground above the plant roots. Even hairlike and woolly spines also assist in shielding plants from cold or severe sun exposure. Native to the Americas, Cacti are found from Canada to Chile, with Mexico having the greatest variety of species.
