Leuchtenbergia genus is comprised in only one species. It is native to north-central Mexico (San Luis Potosi, Chihuahua). This is a sole species (monotypic species), it resembles an Agave. Leuchtenbergia is closely related to Ferocactus and hybrids have been created between these two genera. Plants do not bloom until they are at least 5 years old when flowering sporadically from spring until fall.
